Nearly one dollar in every three generated by New Zealand's economy comes from exports, and our future prosperity depends on our being able to compete in an increasingly competitive and changing global trading environment.

The world does not owe us a living. We have to fight for our share of the global market place. We have to be smart and innovative in our product development, and in how we develop new markets and sell our products. We cannot afford to become too reliant on any one market or product.

Our future does not lie in competing directly against the economies of scale enjoyed by the low-cost manufacturing giants of China and India. It lies in taking full advantage of the competitive advantages our pastoral-based agriculture and natural resources provide, while also developing high-quality services and sophisticated niche products that appeal to world consumers.

We have shown we are capable of becoming world leaders in areas such as the film industry, fashion, wine making and niche high-tech markets. We have to be innovative and creative in developing these and other new areas.

However in order to regain our place in the top half of the developed world we need new thinking, new efforts and better links into the global economy.

Strengthening New Zealand's international connections is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to assist businesses to create successful international market development strategies.

It is important that customers have confidence in the capabilities and credentials of potential suppliers. The Register of Accredited and Certified Suppliers provides that information which is crucial to building successful partnerships.
